DC Solid control steel frame shaker screen is mostly applied to the shale shakers with wedge fastening equipment. The screen frames using high-strength square steel tube welded into multi-ribbed slab structure, sturdy and durable.

Most drilling rigs operate their primary flow line shakers with screens that are far too coarse (to achieve meaningful solids control. Many factors cause this selection, and we now find ourselves in a viscous industrial cycle.

Shale shakers “heart and soul”- shaker screen

Basically, a screen acts as a “go/no-go” gauge: Either a particle is small enough to pass through the screen or it is not. Screening surfaces used in solids control equipment are generally made of multi-layered woven wire screen cloth and are the “heart and soul” of the shaker.

Fundamentally, the quality of a shaker is defined by the quality of screens it utilizes. When selecting a solids control system it is important that the quality of the screen manufacturing and level of experience by the in manufacturing screens is considered.


If the system is appropriately set up with a scalping system and a fine shaker screen system, the scalping screens must be sized just coarse enough to ensure that drilling fluid does not sheet off the shaker (i.e. whole mud losses). This happens when the scalping screen is too fine to allow the drilling fluid to pass into the solids control system’s dirty tank.


Typical scalping screen configurations for HDD applications range from 50 mesh (API 50) to 120 mesh (API 100). Typical fine screen configurations range from 160 (API 120) to 200 mesh (API 170). The API 13C classification is gaining traction in the HDD industry as more contractors focus on the micron cut point they are trying to achieve in their fluid.

Relative to the use of shaker screens, it is the size of the screen openings, not the mesh count that determines the size of the particles separated by the screen. It is because of this fact that HDD system users should compare and specify screens based on their API 13C designation.

Two types arrangement of the installation screen

Screen installation arrangement has two types of tandem and parallel.

  1. Tandem type installation screen

Tandem installing screen is that the drilling fluid must pass through two or more than two screens with decreasing pore size which are separated from each other by some distance. This arrangement has the advantages of the upper screen firstly screen out the large size ofcuttings, it can protect the more fine screen underlying effectively, especially in fast drilling. And when the solid content of the drilling fluid is increased, lower layer screen will not be overloaded; And the shortcomings of this kind of sieve are that it is not easy to observe the lower layer screen, if the replacement is not timely after being damaged, it will influence the treatment effect of drilling fluid.

Coupled with the inconvenient replacement, only one layer of screen is used in some crew.


  1. Parallel type installation screen.

Parallel installation screen refers to two or more than two meshes lap together and form a long screen. This type of instalation has the advantages of  increasing the treatment capacity and will not let the drilling fluid run away(because of the long screen); When a section of screen is broken, only the broken section needs to be changed. This can save the cost of screen and the replacement is more convenient. The disadvantage is that the structure is complex and the weight of the whole machine is increased.

The steel frame screen and the combination of 2 to 3 layers of stainless steel mesh in the framework of the constitution of the type of screen features are as follows:

(1) The screen nets with different mesh size, accurate and reasonable collocation and the screening effect is more careful.

Requirements of screen surface of shaker screen

The basic requirements of the drilling process for the shale shaker is not only recover drilling fluid as much as possible, but also remove harmful solid phase as much as possible. This requires that: Firstly, in order to improve the throughput and recycle drilling fluid, solids on the surface of the screen should be drained away as soon as possible; Secondly, the solid particles in the sieve surface is best not to make sliding movement in order to reduce screen wear; Thirdly, the critical particles that stuck in the mesh hole should be easily through the sieve hole or jump off the screen surface.

In order to meet the above requirements, shale shaker should let the solid particles do throwing motion on  the sieve surface. But tangential acceleration along the screen surface of particles not need to be too big, because over large screen normal acceleration will accelerate the the impact to screen when particles falling down, so that part of the cuttings group was crushed, and increase the screening rate, it is not easy to recycle liquid phase.

So as long as the particles can overcome the adhesion force, firction and surface tension  between itself and the drilling fluid and to ensure drilling liquid go through the screen smoothly. At the same time, the shorter the time that the solids phase stay on the the screen is, and the less the beat frequency is, so the smaller of the probability of screening is.
