A typical mud gas separator is constructed of a cylindrical vessel with a series of baffles in it. The drilling fluid from the wellbore enters the mud gas separator, and the action of the fluid hitting the baffles separates easily removed gas from the fluid. The gas exits through a vent line at the top of the mud gas separator and is safely vented away from the rig floor. The mud exits the mud gas separator through a line near the bottom of “up hill” to return to the pit system.

There are numerous factors that involved to select a suitable size mud gas separator:
1. Kick size – A reasonable scenario for a kick size is needed so that the size of the gas bubble when it is circulated to the surface can be calculated.
2. Maximum casing pressure – The casing pressure realized when the gas reaches the surface.
3. Kick circulation rate – The kick circulation rate is required in order to calculate the gas flow rate through the system.
4. Vent line friction – The vent line friction is needed in order to calculate the required height of the fluid leg.
5. Mud leg height – The minimum mud leg height is calculated using the vent line friction pressure and the fluid density anticipated during the kick circulation.

Poor boy-open bottom type mud gas separator’s structure

The mud gas separator has two types of closed bottom and open bottom, and the open bottom mud gas separator is also called the ‘poor boy’.

The basic structure of the open bottom type mud gas separator is a vertical steel cylinder which has a open bottom(or has a discharge port with larger diameter). There is a drilling fluid inlet on one side of the cylinder, the top of which is a gas discharged port. The cylinder body of ‘poor boy’ is a steel cylinder with a diameter of 355-610mm (or more).

When the drilling fluid returning from the wellhead, it flow into the inlet tube of degassing cylinder through the gas barrier mainfold, the inlet pipe is determined by the diameter of the gas barrier tube.

For example, when the diameter of the air barrier pipe is 50mm,then the diameter of the inlet pipe is 100mm, while the gas outlet pipe of the mud gas separator should be 150mm.

When  the diameter of the cylinder is 1000mm, then the diameter of the exhaust port should be 200mm. There are many baffles in the cylinder of ‘poor boy’ mud gas separator, which are arranged in different shapes. Its role is to withstand the impact of drilling fluid, and to help the formation of turbulence, so that the drilling fluid layer becomes thin, in order to promote the separation, rupture, escape of bubbles and liquid.

The exhaust pipeline should be connected to the place where is far away from the well place, in order to separate the gas into the distance. It should be noted that the resistance in the exhaust pipe must be small, to ensure that the pipeline back pressure is very small.

Mud gas separator installation and maintenance

Mud gas separator is a special kind of equipment for primary degasification from gas-bearing drilling fluid in process of drilling .

It installation as following

1. Install and fix separator on the special base or hard and horizontal ground . To keep it stable , tighten it by ropes whose ends are inserted into ground .

2. In order to reduce the frictional resistance the min . internal diameter of exhaust manifold should be no less than 250mm .

3. Fixation is necessary while install pipe manifold . Connection of pipes should strictly accord with the installationdrawings .

1. Open the screw plug for sand discharge in the manifold side to remove sand when the mud discharge manifold is blocked .

2. The separator assembly is pressure container , so it must be used in designed working pressure and surrounding . Overpressure work is forbidden . The safety valve should be checked at least once a year .

3. The baffle should be checked after a well has been completed . Replace it if there is something wrong .

4. Welding on the separator assembly is forbidden

5. The exhaust pipe and liquid discharge pipe should be arranged separately when the separator is paralleled . Uniting the pipe is forbidden .
