Characteristics and application of Hydrocyclone desander

According the theory of centrifugal sedimentation and density difference, when water fluid is tangential enter into equipment from desander inlet by a certain pressure will produce strong spiral motion. The heart of the Desander, desilter and mud cleaner are the cyclonic cone (Polyurethane hydrocyclone), ranging from 4-inch to desilter’s up to 12-inch desanders.

Desander
Drilling fluid under pressure is directed into the cone through the tangential inlet. Rotary movement is created when the fluid strikes the curved inner wall of the cone. This sets up a centrifugal force which separates the fluid into conical layers. The heavier particles are forced to the cone wall and move downward by gravity.

The unit can be stonealone for use or assembled above our shale shaker through pre-designed connectors. The number of desander and desilter cones is customizable according to the real conditions.

Introduction of the desander cones for solid control

Desander is used as the 2nd stage of solids control for drilling fluids, which makes separations between 45 and 75 μm. DCCNQ Series Desilter is used as the 3rd stage of solids control for drilling mud, which makes separations between 15 and 45 μm.

Usually the cone diameter is more than 6″is called Desander, and used as the second-control equipment in drilling operation. We commonly used 8 “and 10” cones desander to separate solid-phase particle size 47-76μm in the drilling fluids.

Desander, as stated earlier, have no moving parts. The larger the internal diameter (ID) of the desander is, the greater the amount of fluid it is able to process and the larger the size of the solids removed.

Desander (10 in.cone) are able to remove roughly 50 percent of those solids within the 40-50 micron range at a flow rate of 500 gallons per min (gal/min), while desilter (4 in. Cone) are able to remove approximately 50 percent of those solids within the 15-20 micron range at a flow rate of 60 gal/min. Micro fine separators are  able to remove around 50 percent of those solids within the 10-15 micron range at a flow rate of 15 gal/min.

Desander is typically positioned next-to-last in the arrangement of solids control equipment, with decanting centrifuge as the subsequent processing unit. Desander are preceded by gas busters, gumbo removal equipment (if utilized), shale shakers, mud cleaner (if utilized) and vacuum degasser. Desander is widely used in oilfield
drilling.

A desander has an entry port near the top on the side of the vessel, a hydrocyclone central component, and two discharge points (one on the top of the vessel and one on the bottom). The hydrocyclone is oriented so that the wide opening is at the top and the narrow opening at the bottom.

Desanding plants produced by DC Solid control

Desanding plants are employed to remove soil particles in drilling mud and support slurry used in foundation engineering. They can be either water-bentonite, water- polymere, or water-cement and bentonite suspensions. Desanding plants have further applications in gravel pits, in the mining industry and in microtunneling projects.

The regeneration or cleaning capacity of a desanding plant is determined by the plant′s intake capacity of contaminated suspension. It is defined in m3/h. The regeneration efficiency or the “significant cut-off point” d50 indicates the smallest particle size of which at least 50% can be removed from a suspension. It is
expressed in 1/1000 mm or micron.

The main components of all desanding plants are:

Coarse screen for intercepting stones larger than 5 mm.
Storage tank of the coarse screen cyclone with cyclone feeder pump for removing fine particles from the suspension.
Dewatering screens for abstracting further water from the solids dis-charged by the cyclone.

The specially designed drilling mud hydrocyclone units are primarily used for removal of sand-size and silt-size particles from returned drilling fluids. The standalone desander/desilter hydrocyclone unit can be assembled above linear motion shale shaker to recycle the useful drilling fluids from hydrocyclone underflow screening by fine mesh screens. Mud cleaner which combines desander, desilter and dewatering shale shaker in one unit is often used in nowadays drilling applications.

Purpose use of desander in drilling fluid cleaning system

The hydrocyclone is an inverted conical shaped shell into which pressurised slurry is injected tangentially at the top/wide end. This induces the fluid to flow around the circumference of the shell and downwards to a small opening at its apex.

Desanders shall be balanced to produce a spray discharge using the procedure outlined above before use. Cones shall be stripped and cleaned after every period of continuous use. The application of desanders will depend upon the type of mud in use.

A desander: shall be run continuously with unweighted water based mud to maintain low mud gradient, in top hole sections onlymay be run sparingly with weighted water based mud shall never be used with oil based mud.

The purpose of Desanders is:

1. To maintain sand content of mud below 0.5%.
2. To prevent overloading of desilters.
3. A feed rate of 300 – 400 gpm shall be used.

Since, in practice, the cut point of most 12” cones may be of the order of 200 – 220 microns for an unweighted water based mud, utilisation of screens of finer than
80 mesh may negate the need for desander.

Working flow of the desander unit :
The sand pump sucked the mud from the Sediment Basins or mud compartment, then enter into bottom shale shaker through inletpipe, the particle size which is larger than 0.5mm will be separated out and flow to mud storage trough, the slurry pump sucked from mud storage trough, the mud was jetted to hydrocyclone, the “light” particle sand was discharged to upper shaker from the outlet of the desander cone.

After dewatering process of the upper shaker, the dry slag charge was separated out, the mud passed the upper shaker was back to mud storage trough,the clean mud entered into mud storage tank through cone overflow pipe, then flow to mud outlet pipe.
