The main function for a drilling fluid in HDD applications is hole cleaning. It is crucial to avoid cuttings beds forming, a build-up of drilled cuttings on the low side of the hole. Equally as important is promoting hole stability.

A typical HDD solids control system will employ a combination of shaker, hydrocyclone, mixing, pump and compartmentalized tank technologies. The shaker is vital to the solids control system and is considered the first line of defense. Located directly downstream from the shaker will likely be a hydrocyclone assembly that will employ
desilters, desanders or both.

Coal bed methane(CBM) is a form of natural gas that is extracted from coal bed seams. Smetimes it is called coalbed methane, or coalbed gas, or coal mine methane (CMM). The primary energy source of CBM is a substance called methane (CH4), which is colourless, tasteless, non-toxic & flammable, making coalbed methane available to be used in all natural gas appliances in our home and also commercial applications such as electricity generation. CBM is generated either from a biological process as a result of microbial action or from a thermal process as a result of increasing heat with depth of the coal. It is hold loosely in the coal bed seams by the water & underground pressure. As the main content of CBM, methane has very low solubility to water.  To explore CBM, the underground water must need to be removed by pumping, which would reduce the pressure on gas and allow it to detach from the coal bed seam. Thus, CBM that hold in the coal bed seams can be released to the surface with the flowing of water, then CBM are separated from water and collected by special device at the surface.
Coalbed methane is usually very shallow, mainly around 1000 meters. That is why the drilling rigs for CBM are normally for 1000 to 2000 meters. The type & density of drilling fluids for CBM development must be designed and fixed according to the formation pressure, and also need to allocate appropriate solids control equipment, such as shale shaker, mud cleaner, centrifuge, etc. For surface well & intermediate section drilling, drilling medium should refer to the conventional CBM drilling medium optimization principle, while for horizontal well drilling, it should use superior drillingmedium, non-clay drilling fluids, fresh water, gas, such as nitrogen, air, etc. & also froams to avoid drilling medium to harm the coal bed seams.

PetroChina puts CBM drilling on hold

PetroChina is putting its coalbed methane (CBM) drilling on hold as complex geology and limited lifting technology have put a damper on the company’s lofty production targets, noted RBC Capital Markets analyst Peter Hutton July 8.
Plans to drill up to 2,000 production wells in the Shanxi and Shaanxi provinces are said to be under review as drilling results currently do not support production volumes earlier anticipated, noted Hutton, citing the International Oil Daily’s report that 700 of 1,000 wells already drilled have turned up dry.

In 2012, China’s Ministry of Land and Resources estimated China’s CBM deposits may be the third largest in the world by volume, at approximately 120.7 tcf.
Daniel Yergin, IHS vice chairman and a co-author of a report on global unconventional resources in early 2013, referenced the potential for a large resource base in China, perhaps even larger than in the US, but cautioned that production may differ greatly as “circumstances that promoted this development in the US differ in important aspects from other parts of the world.”
Despite the potential of the Shouyang and Qinnan blocks in Shanxi Province and the Enhong and Laochang areas in Yunnan Province – three of China’s largest CBM fields – issues with CBM pipelines and CBM-fired power plants have, along with the complex geology of the fields and a lack of regulatory support, troubled the development of China’s CBM industry for a decade.
According to Hutton, China produced 0.6bcm last year, far from the pace needed to hit its 2015 production target of 30bcm in 2015.
