DC desilter is the third class solids control equipment to treat the drilling fluids. According to the size of the cone diameter, they are divided into Desander and Desilter. Usually the cone diameter is less than 6″is called Desilter, and used as the third-control equipment in drilling operation.

The heart of the Desander, desilter and mud cleaner are the cyclonic cone (Polyurethane hydrocyclone), ranging from 4-inch to desilter’s up to 12-inch desanders.

Drilling fluid under pressure is directed into the cone through the tangential inlet. Rotary movement is created when the fluid strikes the curved inner wall of the cone. This sets up a centrifugal force which separates the fluid into conical layers. The heavier particles are forced to the cone wall and move downward by gravity.

Use advantages of the drilling fluid centrifuges for solid control system

One of the most effective ways of solids control is with an oilfield decanter centrifuge. With a horizontal oilfield decanter centrifuge, the mixture of drilling liquid and cuttings and solids enter into the centrifuge. When it enters the centrifuge, it gets spun at an extremely high rate, sometimes as much as 3000 times the force of gravity. When this happens, the solids will separate from the liquids. When they are separated, the drilling liquid can be decanted and eventually returned to the mud tank where it can be replaced into the borehole for efficient drilling.

On many oilfields the site footprint is not large enough to support a wide range of solids control equipment.
