The first line of solid control system- shale shaker

The first line of defense for a properly designed solids control system has been and will continue to be, the shale shaker. Without proper screening of the drilling fluid during this initial removal step, reduced efficiency and effectiveness of all downstream solids control equipment in the system is assured. The downstream hydrocyclones will simply be overloaded beyond their designed capacity.

The shale shaker, in various forums has played a prominent role in solids control systems for several decades. The two main shale shakers utilized in the utility industry are: Elliptical,“unbalanced” design Linear,“straight line” design.

Shale Shaker Maintenance
Because of their greater efficiency & complexity the use of finer mesh screens is essential. This requires more attention than the standard scalping shale shaker screen.

Besides periodic lubrication, fine screen use requires the following care:

Wash down screens with power washer regularly
Check screens for tear or rips
Make sure screens are properly mounted
Make sure shaker is at proper angle
Check wiring or a regular basis high speed shakers tend to wear through wiring insulation
In addition, frequent checks must be made for plugging or blinding screens. The shaker angle can be increased or decreased to help eliminate this problem. For blinding screens a more coarse or finer screen may be installed to help solve the problem.

Remember your shale shaker is your first line of defense in your solids control system, Choose a shale shaker that is correct for your application and have rig
personnel learn to use it correctly.

At the end of Nov. DC Machinery shipped 1000pcs shaker screen to Singapore drilling contract. The type of the shaker screen include the steel frame and hookstrip the two types.

The DC steel frame shaker screen is mostly applied to the shale shakers with wedge fastening equipment. The screen frames using high-strength square steel tube welded into multi-ribbed slab structure, sturdy and durable.

These screens are constructed with two or three stainless steel layers bonded to a steel support plank. Accessary rubber plugs may be used to repair rips or tears.  Mesh sizes range from 20 to 320mm.  DC steel frame shaker screen is prodcued based on the international standard.

And the Hook Strip Flat Shaker Screen utilize an advanced frame design and unique mesh combinations to effectively and efficiently separate detrimental drilled solids from drilling fluid.

DC designed and perfect the economic mud recycling system specially for the drilling mud cleaning application in piling project. On the consideration of limited location area of the piling project job site, DC’s piling mud recycling system is designed with a very compact structure but with full functions for drilling mud recycling.

Working flow of the desander unit :
The sand pump sucked the mud from the Sediment Basins or mud compartment, then enter into bottom shale shaker through inletpipe, the particle size which is larger than 0.5mm will be separated out and flow to mud storage trough, the slurry pump sucked from mud storage trough, the mud was jetted to hydrocyclone, the “light” particle sand was discharged to upper shaker from the outlet of the desander cone.

After dewatering process of the upper shaker, the dry slag charge was separated out, the mud passed the upper shaker was back to mud storage trough,the clean mud entered into mud storage tank through cone overflow pipe, then flow to mud outlet pipe.

Mud agitator is used in the surface mud tank to suspend solids and maintain a homogeneous mixture throughout the mud solids control system. Nearly every large compartment of mud mixing and storage tank should be equipped with mud agitators to maintain the proper properties of drilling mud that will pump back to the borehole.

The oilfield mud tank agitator is configured with an explosion-proof motor, reduction gearbox, impeller, and shaft with assembly bushings. Canted blade impeller are commonly used. Horsepower, mechanical configuration, impeller diameter, number of impeller and shaft length are customized to tank dimensions and maximum mud weights. Here is a list of our recommended configuration.

We hear the motors vary from each other as well. Such as30 HP motor of 380V/50Hz/3Ph and 4 poles. For mud process, usually we request agitator rotate at 60~70 rpm, thus we’ll find proper gearbox with certain reduction ratio. (Of course, the rated speed was calculated well prior to model selection under torque demand, and so on)

For example, if we require shaft rotates 62 rpm with 1450 rpm motor, then the gearbox reduction ratio should be about 23:1. While if we request shaft rotates 13 rpm with 730 rpm motor, then the reduction box should hold reduction ratio at about 56:1.

Drilling fluid maintenance cost, clean up & disposal cost as well as the over all cost of boring, can be reduced dramatically when proper solids control techniques are
utilized.

The shale shakers were derived from technology used in the mining industry. The shale shaker remains today the primary piece of solids control equipment utilized in the industry.

The future path of solids control systems will continue to increase the overall removal efficiency of undesirable solids from the drilling mud. This will include continued improvements in shale shakers and screen life. Research investigating alternate technology such as using vacuum techniques and different motions may prove more effective in the future.

The continuing trend of more stringent environmental regulations around the world will require more and more solids control systems to be implemented to minimize haul off of drilling waste not to mention the cost saving on equipment such as mud pumps and mud motors.
