Many factors are involved to select a suitable size mud gas separator

Mud gas separator located at downstream of the choke manifold is one of the important well control equipment that you need to focus. It separates gas out of the mud after the gas comes out of hole.



A typical mud gas separator is constructed of a cylindrical vessel with a series of baffles in it. The drilling fluid from the wellbore enters the mud gas separator, and the action of the fluid hitting the baffles separates easily removed gas from the fluid. The gas exits through a vent line at the top of the mud gas separator and is safely vented away from the rig floor. The mud exits the mud gas separator through a line near the bottom of “up hill” to return to the pit system.



There are numerous factors that involved to select a suitable size mud gas separator:
1. Kick size – A reasonable scenario for a kick size is needed so that the size of the gas bubble when it is circulated to the surface can be calculated.
2. Maximum casing pressure – The casing pressure realized when the gas reaches the surface.
3. Kick circulation rate – The kick circulation rate is required in order to calculate the gas flow rate through the system.
4. Vent line friction – The vent line friction is needed in order to calculate the required height of the fluid leg.
5. Mud leg height – The minimum mud leg height is calculated using the vent line friction pressure and the fluid density anticipated during the kick circulation.

45m3/h treating capacity drilling fluid centrifuge for a domestic user

Drilling fluid centrifuge is the fourth stage solid control equipment of the whole mud cleaning system. DC VFD drive decanter centrifuge with variable speed allows drilling contractor or mud service company to do the barite recovery, fine/ ultra fine solids separation, dewatering centrifuge.

One of the biggest advantages to having an oilfield decanter centrifuge is the size that it takes up. Compared to other solids control equipment, a centrifuge takes up less real estate. On many oilfields the site footprint is not large enough to support a wide range of solids control equipment. A centrifuge is highly effective and efficient so you can separate solids from drilling liquids even on small drilling sites.

Mud cleaners were developed in the early 1970s to remove fine drilled solids from weighted mud without excessive loss of barite and fluid. The mud cleaners use multiple 4 or 5cyclones, mounted over a vibrating screen, and are able to effectively process 400-600 GPM. The process capacity is limited by screen capacity and its ability to discard dry solids.


With the introduction of linear motion vibrating screens, the capacity of the mud cleaner screen has been greatly increased. This, in turn, allows the use of additional hydrocyclones and higher, overall process capabilities.

The primary function of a mud cleaner is to remove sand and silt from drilling fluids in the drilling rigs. The usual size of a desilter is 6 inches and above, however, the most common size is 10 inches.
