What is zero discharge solids control equipment?

Via 20-year grueling efforts from 1990s to 21st century, DaCuan has developed oil drilling solids control system and waste management equipment and has set up an integrated waste management solution system by combination of domestic and foreign treatment experience learnt on the site.

This solution would deal with disposal at the source by means of solids control equipment, dewatering purification equipment and waste management equipment.

The first part—solids control equipment, comprising shale shaker, vacuum degasser, desander, desilter, decanter centrifuge, is directly connected to mud pumps. The drilling mud drawn out from well would go through the four phases of solids control system. Afterwards, it would be used again and the disposal is minimized at the same time.

The next part after solids control is dewatering and water treatment, via which water may be effectively recycled. If they are applied in water-scarce area, large amount of water would be saved and waste disposal reduced.

Then, screw pump or screw conveyor may transport dewatered waste to Hi-G Dryer and Vertical Centrifuge, waiting to have solids and liquid separated again. Hi-G Dryer’s high spinning speed and effective treatment would produce very dry dregs, recover partial drilling fluids and recycle resources.

In the end, the dregs would be further treated by means of solidification, cutting injection, biodegradation, thermal desorption according to the actual situation on the site of drilling and the composition of dregs.

Drilling waste disposal would be reduced to almost zero after go through the system, effectively satisfying the demands for zero discharge and the state environmental protection regulations, solving the vexing problems in oil drilling, and truly fulfilling the wish of “green drilling” in oil industry.

At the beginning of last century, drilling fluids concocted by chemical compounds were largely applied while drilling boreholes for improvement of its safety and efficiency. Drilling fluids have been especially useful in carrying out drill cuttings, providing hydrostatic pressure to prevent formation fluids from entering into the well bore, cleaning the bottom of wells, preventing oil and gas from flowing up the wells, keeping the drill bit cool and clean during drilling, etc, which has made it the “blood” of drilling equipment. However, just like every coin has two sides, it would turn into poisonous “blood” when it is discharged onto soil with cuttings since it may contain soluble inorganic salt, heavy metal, organic hydrocarbon (oil substances), etc, which could easily be made harmful via rain immersion and river brush to the surrounding soil, water source, farmland and air.

It is expected that our tentative efforts would make drilling waste management perfect, but the facts did not turn out so. Pollution resulted from oil drilling is still swallowing our healthy environment bit by bit and the problem is still vexing our nerves. Nevertheless, we cannot do without it because the drilling fluids have already been the “blood” in the industrial era.

Decanting centrifuge

A decanting centrifuge consists of a conical, horizontal steel bowl that rotates at high speed using a doublescrew-type conveyor. The conveyor rotates in the samedirection as the outer bowl but at a slightly slower speed. An important aspect of centrifuge operation is the dilution of the slurry being fed into theunit. The slurry dilution reduces the feed viscosity and maintains the separation efficiency of the machine. The higher the viscosity of the base mud, the more dilutions needed.The effluent(liquid output from the centrifuge) viscosity should be 35 to 37 seconds per quart for efficient separation. If the viscosity falls bellow 35 seconds per quart, too much water is being added. This will cause turbulence within the bowl and reduce efficiency. Manufacturers’ recommendations concerning mud-feed rates and bowl speed should be follow closely .

A single centrifuge unit set for total solids discharge should be used for low-density systems. The primary function of a centrifuge is not to control total percent solids in a system, but rather to maintain acceptable and desirable flow properties in that system. The centrifuges operating in series are recommended for the following systems:

1. i.e., synthetic and oil-base systems

2. High-density, water systems

3. Water-base systems in which base fluid is expensive

4. Closed loop

5. Zero- discharge

The first centrifuge unit is used to separate barite and return it to mud system. The second unit processes the liquid overflow from the first unit, discarding all solids and returning the liquid portion to the mud system. Note: Centrifuge efficiencies are influenced by mud weight and mud viscosity. During centrifuge, the underflow should be analyzed regularly to determine the amount of low-gravity solids and barite being removed and retained.


Hydrocyclones, classified as desanders or desilters, are conical solids separation devices in which hydraulic energy is converted to centrifugal force. Mud is fed by a centrifugal pump through the feed inlet tangentially into the feed chamber. The centrifugal forces thus developed multiply the settling velocity of the heavier-phase material, forcing it toward the wall of the cone. The lighter particles move inward and upward in a spiral ingvortex to the overlow opening at the top. The dischargeat the top is the overflow or effluent; the discharge at the bottom is the underflow. The underflow should be in a fine spray with a slight suction at its center. A ropedischarge with no air suction is undesirable.

The size of the cones and pump pressure determine the cut obtained,Lower pressure result in coarser separation and reduced capacity.


Desanders consist of a battery of 6-inch or larger cones.Even though desanders can process large volumes of mud per single cone, the minimum size particles that can be removed are in the range of 40 microns (with 4-inch cones)


Desilters consist of a battery of 4-inch or smaller cones. Depending on the size of the cone, a particle size cut between 6 and 40 microns can be obtained.Even though hydrocyclones are effective in removing solids from a drilling fluid, their use is not recommended for fluids that contain significant amounts of weighting materials or muds that have expensive fluid phases. When hydrocyclones are used with these fluids, not only will undesirable drilled solids be removed, but also the weight material along with base fluid, which can be cost prohibitive.

Mud cleaner

The mud cleaner is a solids separation device that combines a desilter with a screen device. The mud cleaner removes solids using a two-stage process. First, the drilling fluid is processed by the desilter. Second, the discharge from the desilter is processed by a high-energy, fine-mesh screen shaker. This method of solids removal is recommeded for muds containing significant amounts of weighting materials or having expensive fluid phases.

Solids control is the process of controlling the build up of undersirable solids in a mud system. The build up of solids has undesirable effects on drilling fluid performance and the drilling process.Rheological and filtration properties can become difficult to control when the concentration of drilled solids ( low gravity solids ) becomes on a drilling operation rates and bit life decrease and hole problems increase with a high concentration of drill solids.

Solids control equipment on a drilling operation should be operated like a processing plant. In an ideal situation, all drill solids are removed from a drilling fluid. Under typical drilling conditions, low-gravity solids should be maintained bellow 6 percent by volume. Sources and sizes of solids The two primary sources of solids (particles) are chemical sdditives and formation cuttings. Formation cuttings are contaminants that degrade the performance of the drilling fluid.If the cuttings are not, they will be ground into smaller and smaller particles that become more difficult to remove from the drilling fluid. Most formation solids can be removed by mechanical means at the surface. Small particles are more difficult to remove and have a greater effect on drilling fluid properties than large particles. The particle size of drilled solids incorporated into drilling fluid can range from 1 to 250 microns.

Mechanical solids removal equipment One method of solids control is the use of mechanical solids removal equipment.Another method, dilution, is discuss later. Equipment that removes solids mechanically can be grouped into the two major classifications: 1. Screen devices 2. Centrifugal separation device.

Screen devices

The most common screen device is shale shaker, which contains one or more vibrating screens that mud passes through as it circulates out of the hole.

Circular/ elliptical motion shaker.This shaker uses elliptical rollers to generate a circular rocking motion to provide better solids removal through these screens.

Linear motion shaker. This shaker uses a straight forward-and-back rocking motion to keep the fluid circulating through the screens.

Shale shakers/Screening always is applied first in processing the annular mud stream. Recent developments in screening equipment have made possible the use of extremely fine screens. This allows the removal of most of the solids before their size has been reduced to the size of the API barite particles. API specifications for commercial barium sulfate require that 97% of the particles pass through a 200-mesh screen. A 200-mesh screen has 200 openings per inch. Particles less than about 74 microns in diameter will pass through a typical 200 mesh screen. Screen sizes below 200 mesh cannot be used with weighted muds because of the cost of replacing the API barite discarded with the solids.

The natural settling rate of drilled solids is much too low for settling pits to be effective. Thus, devices such as hydrocyclones and centrifuges are used to increase the gravitational force acting on the particles. At present, both the hydro-cyclones and high-speed centrifuges are being used as forced settling devices with unweighted mud. The removal of fine active clay particles can be facilitated by adding chemicals that cause the clay particles to flocculate or agglomerate into larger units. Once the agglomeration of the clay particles has been achieved, separation can be accomplished more easily by settling.

The concentration of the solids not removed by screening or forced settling can be reduced by dilution. Because of the limited storage capacity of the active mud pits, dilution requires discarding some of the mud to the reserve pit. Dilution, thus, requires discarding a portion of the additives used in previous mud treatments. In addition, the new mud created by the addition of water must be brought to the desired density and chemical content. To keep the cost of dilution low, the mud volume should be kept small. Old mud should be discarded before dilution rather than after dilution. Also, the cost of a large one-step dilution is less than frequent small dilutions. The cost of dilution increases rapidly with mud density.

Mud cleaneris a combination of Desander and Desilter, which is mounted over a shaker with a fine mesh screen, to remove the solids from the drilling mud. As the third stage of Solids Control Equipment at drilling rig, mud cleaner plays an important role in Solids Control system.
Mud cleaner is consist of manifold, shaker screen, and hydrocyclone. First the drilling fluids are sucked up to 0.25Mpa ~ 0.4Mpa by sand pump, and enter into the cones through the side inlet which is normally only 2-1/2″ diameter.
