How to control the solids in drilling mud?

In the early oil industry open earthen pits were used as settling area to separate solids and mud thereby acting as a solids control equipment. Now, with the stringent environmental regulations and high mud costs, the economics of an effective mud system come into consideration. Different solids control companies introduce zero-discharge systems, closed-loop systems,”quick move” technology, screening technology, disposal options etc.   So it comes down to common system and equipments in the drilling solids control.

Fluids processing system:It is also called mud system, solids control system, drilling fluids recycling system, in which there are several solids control equipments to treat the drilling fluid so as to recycle it.

Shale shaker: The shale shaker is the first stage of solids control equipment in the fluids processing system,which removes cuttings with diameter above 75μm from the drilling fluids brought up from the wells.Afterwards,the treated fluids flow into the tank waiting to be processed again in the next stage of the system.   Desander: Desander is the second stage of solids control equipment.It is mainly used to take away the solids with diameter ranging from 45 to 74 μm from the formerly treated fluids and then send them to the next stage for more purification.

Desilter: Desilter is the third stage of solids control equipment.In this case,the solids with diameter ranging from 15 to 44 μm are to be separated from the rest,which will go through further processing.

Mud cleaner: Mud cleaner is the second or third stage separation equipment of drilling liquid, which will deal with the mud after being treated by the first grade separation equipment.

Decanting centrifuge: Decanting centrifuge is used in separating suspension of solid phase with particle diameter d≥2μm for drilling mud and fluids handling.

Vacuum degasser: vacuum degasser is a special-purpose device for the treatment of gas-cut drilling fluids.

Mud Gas Separator: Mud Gas Separator is the special equipment of degassing the gas-invaded mud at the first grade. It is mainly used to remove big bubbles with diameter above φ3mm and these bubbles refer to the expanded gas in the fluid that fill in some parts of well annulus.

Centrifugal pump: Centrifugal pump is used for transferring drilling mud. It can be used as feeding pump for desander, desilter or used as mixing pump for Jet Mud Mixer. Also it can be used as trip pump,and supercharging pump for rig mud pump.

Jet mud mixer: Jet mud mixer is used to make and mix drilling fluid to change the density and viscosity.

Mud agitator: Mud agitator is part of the drilling fluid solid control equipment, which is mainly used to agitate and mix the drilling mud to prevent solid particles settlement in circulating tank.

Electronic ignition device:Namely “electronic portfire”. Electronic portfire for relief combustible gas is a device used in refinery and natural gas gathering station to deal the tail gas and relief natural gas.

CBM is generated either from a biological process as a result of microbial action or from a thermal process as a result of increasing heat with depth of the coal. It is hold loosely in the coal bed seams by the water & underground pressure. As the main content of CBM, methane has very low solubility to water.  To explore CBM, the underground water must need to be removed by pumping, which would reduce the pressure on gas and allow it to detach from the coal bed seam. Thus, CBM that hold in the coal bed seams can be released to the surface with the flowing of water, then CBM are separated from water and collected by special device at the surface.
Coalbed methane is usually very shallow, mainly around 1000 meters. That is why the drilling rigs for CBM are normally for 1000 to 2000 meters. HDD mud system

HDD means horizontal directional drilling or Directional boring, is a steerable trenchless method of installing underground pipes, conduits and cables in a shallow arc along a prescribed bore path by using a surface-launched drilling rig, with minimal impact on the surrounding area.

Drilling fluids have several important functions. They cool and lubricate the drill bit, stem and other down hole tools. The fluid also assists in sealing the sides of the bore, therefore stabilizing the borehole. Finally, drilling fluids are designed to carry the cuttings out of the hole.

The most widely used drilling fluids for HDD applications are bentonite, even if they are not so expensive compared with oilfield drilling fluids, but it is still a pollution for the environment, especially usually they dig a mud pit for HDD and pump the drilling fluids from the mud pit to shale shaker. What is hydrocyclone?

Hydrocyclone is a part of desander or desilter. Desander and desilter are solids control equipment. Hydrocyclone raw material is high wear-resistant polyurethane , it have the advantages of well performance, long service life, low price.

Hydrocyclones are common industrial and manufacturing process separators used to remove solids from carrier liquids or to separate liquids of different consistencies. They are simple yet efficient devices with no moving parts and requiring very little maintenance. Commonly known as cyclones, these devices are generally constructed of steel, ceramics, or abrasion resistant plastics. Typical uses of hydrocyclones are removing contaminates from paper pulp, separating of oil from water, extracting metal shavings from cooling liquids, and starch recovery from waste water in potato processing facilities. Cyclones are also found in the mining industry processing plants to separate process solids from water.

A hydrocyclone is a filter or separator mechanism that uses centrifugal force to separate solids from liquids or even liquids of different consistencies. The hydrocyclone consists of a two-part chamber with a inner profile which is cylindrical along its upper section and conical along the lower half fitted with one entry and two exit points. When a suspension is pumped into the cyclone, it spins around the inside of the chamber creating a centrifugal force which causes suspended solids to separate from the liquid carrier. The filtered water and solids then exit the hydrocyclone, typically at opposite ends. Hydrocyclones are used extensively in industrial and manufacturing sectors and are suited for liquid rich suspensions carrying solids heavier than the fluid.

What equipment used in Horizontal Directional Drilling ?

Directional boring, commonly called horizontal directional drilling or HDD, is a steerable trenchless method of installing underground pipes, conduits and cables in a shallow arc along a prescribed bore path by using a surface-launched drilling rig, with minimal impact on the surrounding area.

The equipment used in a horizontal directional drilling depends on the outer diameter of the pipe, length of the run, ground conditions and the surroundings above ground. For the large bores, directional drills equipped with as much as 1 320 000 lb (or more) of thrust/pullback (Vermeer D1320x900)is used in conjunction with a mud reclaimer, excavator, and multiple pumps and hoses to supply the drilling fluid to the drillstem. Directional drilling stem is made from heat-treated high-carbon steel for strength and ships in diameters of 8 – 15 cm. Drill stem sections are manufactured in 3.0 or 4.6 and also 9.1 meter lengths and have male threading on one end, and female on the other. It is common for a directional drill to carry as much as 305 m of rod on board. Drilling heads come in multiple designs and depends on the rock or soil being penetrated. The drilling head has multiple water ports to allow removal of material. A talon bit involves the carbide-tipped cutters. These allow for steering and cutting the material. Another head is a mud-motor that is used in rocky landscapes.
